Group Literacy Coaching for Classroom Teachers

A range of Professional Learning including literacy workshops, facilitated literacy planning, planning for inquiry-based units, literacy data analysis, classroom modelling and observations, goal setting, feedback and reflective practices, cross-curriculum implementation, and embedding evidence-based literacy practices. Professional Learning can also be designed to target your specific literacy needs.

My Instructional Literacy Coaching Program and Professional Learning support teachers and leaders to bring to the classroom a literacy practice that:

  • deepens comprehension through the development of fluency, accuracy, skills and strategies

  • builds upon and expands vocabulary by exploring morphology and etymology

  •  uses effective authorial devices in writing for the appropriate audience, genre and purpose

  • develops writing skills from phrase, to sentence to paragraph level

  • embeds grammar in context meaningfully

  • allows students to read like writers and write like readers, from a whole class level to small groups and independent learners

  • makes authentic connections between curriculum learning areas

  • transforms teaching practice to impact their students’ learning and engagement

Confidence

  • Do you have a strong understanding of the content knowledge required to teach reading and writing and how to successfully and effectively implement this?

  • Are you comfortable providing feedback to students about their learning and identifying areas of success and areas for improvement in reading and writing?

  • Are you hesitant when it comes time to identifying areas of literacy needs when analysing and interpreting student data to strategically/purposefully inform your teaching?

Clarity

  • Are you well-versed in a variety of evidence-based teaching approaches and strategies?

  • Are you unsure how to make connections between reading and writing, along with making authentic curriculum connections between different learning areas in your literacy block?

  • Do you provide clear and explicit opportunities for students to know what they’re learning, why they're learning it and if they’ve been successful in their learning?

Consistency

  • Do you have frequent opportunities to discuss, plan and moderate student reading and writing samples?

  • Are you able to regularly reflect on your teaching practice with a trustworthy colleague to gain insight into your teaching practice?

  • Do you use consistent literacy approaches, terminology and strategies across classes and year levels to ensure students are familiar and aware of their learning?

Educators with the appropriate tools, resources and strategies are better placed to stand in their classrooms with confidence to elevate student learning with clarity and consistency helping students achieve success in their learning.

Literacy Coaching
and Mentoring

A 1:1 virtual mentoring and coaching opportunity for upper primary and lower secondary teachers, where we spend five or ten sessions together focusing on a literacy goal which you have identified in your practice as an area of improvement to work towards achieving success- both for you and your students. Feel confident, clear and consistent in what you're doing and how you're doing it while you teach reading, writing, speaking and listening.

In consultation, we discuss, inquire, plan, prepare, implement and evaluate literacy data to build teacher and leader capacity to improve whole school literacy outcomes.
