Suggested professional reads and TEN student novel recommendations
Well, we made it! Here we are, the last week of the 2024 school year, and what a moment. The concerts are over, the reports have been sent out, the classrooms are packed up, the final end of year events are wrapping up, and the last of the Christmas gifts are being exchanged.
Over the summer holidays, I find it the best time to read and relax, usually when I'm 'baking' at the beach-St Leonards, on the Bellarine Peninsula, in Victoria. It's a family tradition to pack up and make our way down to the coast after Christmas in a house my grandfather built almost 50 years ago! The house still holds all the history, the lasting legacy of my family and the Sutera stories.
In 2025, I look forward to changing things up a bit and sharing my top takeaways with you from monthly professional reads. These will consist of literacy and leadership themed books. I can't wait to share these with you!
ere are a few books on my holidays list as new reads and a few to review in preparation for next year- can you spot the multidimensional approach to literacy and learning?!
(The one with all the tabs is by far my favourite- I need to get the writing version of it.)
If you're a school leader, then this coaching resource might be of interest to you as you prepare to lead and empower your teachers in 2025. If not that, then perhaps slowly bringing in a coaching framework to your conversations. Remember the first thing to do, is to set a literacy vision and actionable steps to achieve success. This ONE question you need to ask yourself, your leadership team and your teachers will help you focus on intention and direction. If you're not there yet, then just take 3 baby steps towards literacy success. If you're also thinking about a multidimensional approach to literacy in 2025 (explicit teaching with student agency), this is for you! If instructional coaching is something you're thinking about bringing on board for next year, I'd love to share some success stories from teachers and leaders this year- just ask!
I imagine as a leader or a teacher, the first thing you'll do once you return to school in 2025 (if not already), is analyse your student literacy data. Not only will you be using the data to inform your teaching, you'll be wanting to set yourself up for success. Setting your classroom up for literacy success is January is pivotal for the remainder of the year.
One of the ways to prepare for the school year is to be across the content being taught, for example, a text-based unit or literature study or novel study-whatever you're calling it when analysing literature, expanding vocabulary and deepening comprehension. These might inspire the text selection ⤵️
I wish you a restful, safe and peaceful break with family and friends. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the 2025 year - it'll be incredible! 😊

If you want to learn more about the ways we can collaborate in 2025, this is for you. Otherwise, let's have a chat in January when I'm back from the beach and you've had time to rest and recharge!
